Before the Antietam Campaign: He was a lawyer, having passed the bar in 1860 in Greensboro. He entered service as First Lieutenant, and was promoted to Captain of Company B, 27th North Carolina Infantry (probably to date from 28September 1861 when Captain Sloan was promoted Lieutenant Colonel).
