Before Sharpsburg

Age 20, he enlisted as a Private in Company H, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 20 April 1861 in Greenville. He was appointed 3rd Sergeant on 6 September 1861 and promoted to First Sergeant on 3 February 1862. He was appointed Regimental Sergeant Major on 19 February.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the chest in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured.

The rest of the War

He was sent to Fort McHenry, MD by 22 September, paroled there on 25 October, and exchanged at Aiken's Landing, VA on 10 November 1862. He was furloughed at Richmond, VA on 6 November for 30 days and returned to duty on 17 January 1863. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 15 January 1863 (to date from 10 January) and transferred as such to Company H, 44th North Carolina Infantry in February. He was killed at Bristoe Station, VA on 14 October 1863.
