Before Sharpsburg

From Lenoir County, he enlisted on his 25th birthday (17 April) 1861 in Company C, 27th North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal on 10 July 1861 and to Sergeant on 1 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the arm and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was treated in a hospital in Frederick, MD on 19 September, then sent to Fort McHenry, MD on 1 October. He was paroled and sent to Aiken's Landing, VA on 3 October, and exchanged there on 10 November 1862.
