Before the Antietam Campaign:
A farmer from Wayne County, he enlisted in Company C, 27th North Carolina Infantry at age 22 on 25 April 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the leg or ankle and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
Paroled on 20 September and discharged on 12 April 1863 for disability from wounds.
