Before the Antietam Campaign:
A farmer from Lenoir County he enlisted at age 26 in May 1862 in Company C, 27th North Carolina Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the shoulder in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
Captured at Bristoe Station, VA on 14 October 1863. Confined at the Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC, and transferred to Point Lookout, MD on 27 October. Paroled and transferred to City Point, VA on 20 March 1864 for exchange. Present or accounted for through February 1865.
