Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Lenoir County, he enlisted at age 34 on 17 April 1861 in Company C, 27th North Carolina Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the foot in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Deserted on 8 December 1864, returned to duty on 27 January 1865, but deserted again on 7 February.
