Before the Antietam Campaign: From Lenoir County, he enlisted at age 28 on 17 April 1861 in Company C, 27th North Carolina Infantry. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in the arm in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg. The remainder of the War: Reported absent wounded until 26 July 1864, when he was retired to the Invalid Corps.
