Age 18, from Guilford County, he enlisted on 20 April 1861 at Fort Macon, NC and mustered as Private, Company B, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 20 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, in the left thigh at Reams Station, VA on 25 August 1864 and his leg was amputated. He was retired to the Invalid Corps on 12 November 1864.
