In the Antietam Campaign:
Captured at or near Sharpsburg on 19 September 1862 after having been left behind to attend the wounded.

The remainder of the War:
Held at Fort McHenry, MD and Fortress Monroe, VA until exchanged 10 November 1862. Wounded 13 December 1862 in the thigh at Fredericksburg, VA. Detailed as a teamster on 7 July 1863 and rejoined his Company on 22 April 1864. Wounded at the Wilderness, VA on 5 May 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, VA on 9 April 1865.
