Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted on 27 June 1861 as Private in Company D. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 21 February and First Lieutenant on 22 April 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
In command of Company D, 27th North Carolina Infantry at Sharpsburg, and wounded in the neck there in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Died of wounds in North Carolina on 3 December 1862 at age 24.
