Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted as Corporal in Company D on 18 May 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant on 22 April 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the leg and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Held at Fort McHenry, until paroled and transferred to Aiken's Landing, VA on 2 November 1862, where he was exchanged on the 10th. He transferred to Company I, 9th Regiment North Carolina State Troops (1st Cavalry) on 25 February 1865.
