Before the Antietam Campaign: He enlisted in Company D on 27 April 1861 at age 17. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in the thigh in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg. The remainder of the War: Promoted to Corporal sometime before August 1864. Hospitalized at Charlottesville, VA on 18 October 1863 with a gunshot wound (date and place of wound not recorded, but likely 14 October at Bristoe Station).
