Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Lenoir County, he enlisted in Company D on 18 May 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the left elbow in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
Reported absent wounded through November 1862. Transferred to Company K, 61st Regiment North Carolina State Troops about 9 June 1863.
