He enlisted in Company D on 27 April 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Wounded again, in action at the Wilderness, VA on 5 May 1864. Captured at Hatcher's Run, VA on 31 March 1865. Held at Point Lookout, MD until released on 24 June 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
