Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in Company E, 61st North Carolina Infantry, but never reported for duty with that unit. He enlisted in Company D, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 28 April 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the leg in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
Wounded at the Wilderness, VA on 5 May 1864. Captured at Fort Stedman, VA on 25 March 1865.
