Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 26 in Company D on 27 April 1861. He was promoted to Corporal on 5 May, but reduced again to Private on 22 April 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the arm in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted back to Corporal in November, 1862. Surrendered at Appomatox Courthouse, VA on 9 April 1865.
