Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Pitt County, he originally enrolled 19 April 1861 as Adjutant of the Regiment. He was later appointed Captain, Company E.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds on 19 September 1862 in camp with his Company, age 20.
