He enlisted as First Sergeant, Company F on 16 May 1861. Elected First Lieutenant on 22 April 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in the thigh and head in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds on 16 November 1862 in Charlestown, VA at age 23.
