Before the Antietam Campaign:
A clerk living in Orange County, he enlisted at age 19 in the Orange Guards (later Company G, 27th North Carolina Infantry) on 20 April 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
