Before the Antietam Campaign:
A cabinet maker, probably in Hillsborough before the War, he enlisted in Company G on 20 April 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the arm in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was wounded again in action, on 14 October 1863 at Bristoe Station, VA and on 5 May 1864 at the Wilderness, VA. He was captured on 2 April 1865 at Petersburg, VA and held at Point Lookout, MD until he took the Oath of Allegiance on 10 June 1865.
