Before the Antietam Campaign: A farmer in Orange County, he enlisted in the Orange Guards (later Company G, 27th North Carolina Infantry) on 18 June 1861 at age 20. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in the arm in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg. The remainder of the War: He died of disease on 12 January 1863 at Chimborazo Hospital. Richmond, VA.
