Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 20 in Company G, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 3 March 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the arm in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He returned to his Company on 4 March 1863. He was captured in action on 4 April 1865 at Sutherland's Station, VA. He was held at Point Lookout, MD until taking the Oath of Allegiance on 21 June 1865.
