From Granville County, he enlisted in Company I, 23rd North Carolina Infantry on 17 June 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds at Sharpsburg on 25 September at age 21.
