Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Moore County, he enlisted in Company C, 35th North Carolina Infantry on 12 September 1861. He was in action at New Bern, NC, below Richmond, Malvern Hill, the reduction of Harpers Ferry, and Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He died near Gordonsville, VA on 18 November 1862 at age 26.
