Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 20 in Cmpany F, 1st North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was detailed on 8 April 1863 to a hospital as a nurse. He was captured in action 6 April 1865 at Dinwiddie Court House, VA and held at Point Lookout, MD until he was released on taking the Oath of Allegiance on 21 June 1865.
