Before the Antietam Campaign:
Then living in Robeson County, he enlisted in Company G, 24th North Carolina Infantry on 4 June 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, his 26th birthday.

The remainder of the War:
He was reported as absent wounded in January and February 1864, place and date of wound not shown. He was mortally wounded in action in the trenches at Petersburg, VA on 9 July 1864 and died of wounds on 15 July 1864, place not recorded but probably Richmond, VA.
