Before the Antietam Campaign: He enlisted at age 26 as a Private on 10 June 1861 in the unit that became Company K, 27th North Carolina Infantry. He was elected 3rd Lieutenant on 22 April 1862, and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 18 July 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He commanded Company K as senior officer at Sharpsburg, and was wounded in the thigh and captured in action there.
