Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted as a Private in Company K, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 10 June 1861 in Wayne County. He was elected 4th Sergeant on 22 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in the hip in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of wounds, probably while a prisoner, at Sharpsburg on 21 September 1862.
