Before the Antietam Campaign:
A farmer, he enlisted in Company D, 15th Virginia Infantry on 13 May 1861. He was first in action at Williamsburg, VA in 1862,

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was in action at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was captured while on vidette on 24 September 1864 and held at Pt. Lookout, MD until 11 April 1865.

After the War:
He lived in Richmond until moving to Charlotte, NC in 1877. He was a merchant in the cotton business and active in the State militia - Colonel of the 4th Regiment - and veteran's organizations.
