Before the Antietam Campaign:
From a farming family, he enlisted in Company C, 35th North Carolina Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was present with his Company at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted to Orderly Sergeant (unknown date) and 2nd Lieutenant, but was captured in action before serving at that rank. He was captured at Petersburg, VA on 17 June 1864 and held at Pt. Lookout, MD and Elmira, NY until released in October 1864. He did not rejoin the regiment.

After the War:
He was in the turpentine distilling business in NC.
