Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Kingston, he enlisted in Company A, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 19 April 1861 and was promoted to Sergeant and First Sergeant before being commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 30 August 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged on 23 January 1863 for disability.
