Before the Antietam Campaign:
From La Crosse, he enrolled as 2nd Lieutenant in Company B, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 18 April 1861. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 27 September 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was promoted Captain to date from 15 September 1862 after Captain Colwell was killed on South Mountain.

The remainder of the War:
He was captured in action at Gettysburg, PA and killed at Laurel Hill, VA on 10 May 1864.
