Before the Antietam Campaign:
From La Crosse, he enlisted in Company B, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 18 April 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was mortally wounded at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862 and died on 9 January 1863.
