Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Boscobel, he enlisted in Company C, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 22 April 1862 as Sergeant. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 17 February 1862 and Captain on 28 March.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was wounded again in action at the Wilderness, VA.
