From Union, He was working as a grocer in Janesville before he enlisted in Company D, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 18 May 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded on South Mountain in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Discharged 4 March 1863 for disability.
