Before the Antietam Campaign:
He graduated 2nd in his class from the USMA in 1842, was on engineering duty, an instructor at West Point, and was on the Utah expedition. In August 1861 he was a Major (USA) and in September was appointed BGen. of Volunteers serving in the defenses of Washington. He commanded the 3rd Brigade/1st Division/VI Corps in the Seven Days.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He led the 3rd Brigade/First Division of the Sixth (VI) Corps.

The remainder of the War:
He commanded the 1st Division/VI Corps at Fredericksburg, and in March 1863 was promoted MGen. of Volunteers, with further service at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. His MGen appointment was revoked in April 1864, and he was reappointed BGen. He then commanded the 2nd Division/IV Corps in the Atlanta campaign, and the District of West Florida.

After the War:
He continued his career Army service, was chief of engineers, and retired in 1886 as Brigadier General, Regular Army. He was then commissioner of public works for New York City and president of the Panama Railroad until his death in 1895.
