Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Oshkosh, he enlisted in Company E, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 21 April 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in the arm in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted to Corporal in June 1863, but was again wounded in action, at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863. He was sick in the hospital when his Company mustered out of service in June 1864.
