Before the Antietam Campaign: From Oshkosh, he enlisted in Company E, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 21 April 1861. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in the arm in action on 17 September 1862. The remainder of the War: He was promoted to Corporal in June 1863, but was again wounded in action, at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863.
