Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Oshkosh, he enlisted in Company E, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 18 May 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Detached to Battery B, 4th US Artillery from September 1862 to 9 March 1864. Wounded also in action at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863.
