Before the Antietam Campaign:
A lumberman from Oshkosh, he enlisted in Company E, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 21 April 1861. He was promoted to Corporal in June 1862 and to Sergeant on 10 September.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Discharged for wounds (date unknown).
