A machinist from Racine, he enlisted in Company F, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 23 April 1861 as Corporal at age 19. Promoted to Sergeant.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Killed in action on 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA.
