Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Portage, he enlisted in Company G, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 19 April 1861, and was promoted First Lieutenant on 25 April. He was wounded in action at First Bull Run in July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted to Captain of the Company on 26 January 1863, but resigned 1 July 1863.
