Before the Antietam Campaign:
A farmer from Spring Green, he enlisted in Company H, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 24 April 1861. Promoted to Corporal and Sergeant.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He carried the Regimental Colors at Gettysburg on 1 July after the bearer went down.

After the War:
He was in Kassuth County, IA in 1901 and a carpenter and member of a GAR Post in Everett, WA at the time of his death.
