From Mineral Point, he enlisted in Company I, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 22 April 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Wounded also at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862. Discharged for wounds on 28 March 1863.
