From Ashford, he enlisted in Company K, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 5 November 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was mortally wounded in action at Gettysburg, PA and died on 30 July 1863.
