Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Reedsburg, he enlisted in Company A, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861 as Sergeant. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 25 October 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 23 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He resigned on 3 December 1862.
