Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Mauston, he enlisted in Company A, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 15 May 1861. He was detached to Battery B, 4th US Artillery 7 June 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862, and was cited for bravery at Antietam by Lt Stewart in his Report.

The remainder of the War:
Discharged for disability on 27 February 1863.

After the War:
He also served in Company E, 41st Wisconsin Infantry, a 100-day unit, from May to September 1864, being commissioned Captain to date from 4 June. In February 1865 he was appointed Captain, Company E, 49th Wisconsin Infantry and served until mustering out with them in February 1866.
