From Granfield, he enlisted in Company A, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861. He was promoted to Corporal and Sergeant.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862, and was honored by brevet to First Lieutenant for his actions at Antietam.
