Before the Antietam Campaign: From Winfield, he enlisted in Company A, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 30 June 1861. He was wounded at Gainesville, VA in August 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862. The remainder of the War: Wounded again at the Wilderness, VA and had his left leg amputated.
