Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Prescott, he enlisted in Company B, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861, and was promoted to Sergeant. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant 25 October 1861, First Lieutenant on 16 January, and Captain on 28 July 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He was wounded and captured in action in the Wilderness and died of wounds in "a Rebel hospital" on 7 May 1864.
