Before the Antietam Campaign: From Perry, he enlisted in Company B, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861. Promoted to Corporal and Sergeant. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862. The remainder of the War: Wounded again in action at Petersburg, VA in 1864, and appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 21 December 1864.
